Chachoengsao Province East Thailand

Chachoengsao (Paet Rio) is situated to the East of Bangkok. We list it in East Thailand for it has more in keeping with other Eastern Provinces than it does with Central Thailand - where it is sometimes listed.

Chachoengsao is a richly fertile area, and as such is mainly dependent upon agricultural production for the major part of its economy. It is a fruit producing area, with the mango as its main crop. The Bang Pakong River, which runs through the province, is responsible for the age old fertility of the area's soil.

To the east of the province, there are small mountains with a height of some 300m above sea-level. Generally the rest of the province is flat plain, agricultural land.

Like all areas in the East of Thailand, Chachoengsao is undergoing rapid change.

Hotels and Resorts

Chachoengsao's other name - 'Paet Rio' literally meaning 'eight stripes' is probably derived from the manner in which local fish were dried - being sliced into eight stripes. Right or wrong, it is a nice little story! Certainly, dried fish are aplenty in the province.

Chachoengsao Province is divided into 10 districts or aphurs - being.....  Amphoe Muang | Bang Khla | Ratchasan | Tha Takiap| Bang Nam Prieo | Bang Pakong | Ban Pho | Phanom Sarakham | Sanam Chai Khet | Plaeng Yao  | King Amphoe Khlong Khuean.

It is not an area noted for important tourist destinations as yet, but again, all of the provinces in east Thailand are undergoing gradual change. Nevertheless, there are some very interesting places - some quite unique to this area of Thailand.
  • Suan Somdej Phra Sri Nakaring is a beautiful garden, complete with large lake, and is to be found in the front of the Chachoengsao Civic hall. It is a very popular relaxation area for local and visitors alike.
  • Chao Mae Guan Im Loy Nam - A  figure - resplendent in ceramics - a photographer's delight. It is to be found on Suppakij road.
  • Khao Hin Sorn is a small hill which has very attractive stone formations. Many such formations are to be seen in the area. The stones are situated as if they had once been positioned by human hand - Landscape Gardeners of the past maybe!!
  • Phraya Sri Sunthorn Voharn Monument was a nobleman in the reign of King Rama V, and was responsible writing a substantial amount of important Thai classical literature.
  • Wat Sothornwararamworaviharn is a splendid temple - the oldest of the temples in the province. It houses the well-known Buddha image of  "Luang Por Sothorn".
  • Chachoengsao Fortifications are to be found along Marupong road. These were constructed - for obvious reasons - during the reign of King Rama III. Cannons are to be found on the walls.
