Kanchanaburi is situated in west central Thailand  It borders Myanmar - Burma as once was - and was a convenient invasion route for the Burmese in days long ago. The mountains to the west, form a natural boundary demarcation line. About 130 km from Bangkok and easily reached by car, Kanchanaburi is well positioned to access many tourists and travellers.

It is the third largest province in Thailand - with Chiang Mai and Nakhon Ratchasima being the largest. The mountains and high plains - together with two major rivers - are home to some superb waterfalls. Erawan waterfalls, having seven cascading tiers and situated in the Erawan National Park amidst rough jungle terrain, lays claim to being the most beautiful waterfall in all of Asia! Not too far away are the Huay Mae Khamin Waterfalls. But, these are best reached by boat or four wheel drive job.

There are substantial wildlife reserves within Kanchanaburi Province. Bird watching, trekking (with or without Elephant) mountain bikes, canoeing, or for the less active (more discerning) there are caves, birds aplenty, fishing, or simply wandering.

On a more reflective and sombre note, there is also the aptly named Death Railway - that of 'Bridge over the River Kwai' fame. The bridge, together with the world war two cemetery, is naturally a draw for visitors. It is well preserved - as are all the other aspects of the railway that was built by the Prisoners of War.
