Photographs cannot capture the immense and somewhat complex structures that now the relics of this once great city. The Burmese, in their heyday, decided to put Ayutthaya to the sword. Do not blame the Burmese, for such actions took place worldwide by all races of people. Much the same still happens today.

That there was once a great civilisation here in Ayutthaya  - skilled and organised - cannot be in doubt and much can be learned by present day cities in Thailand. I doubt that holes in pavements would have been left unfilled here. Even today amidst the ruins of Ayutthaya, you can 'feel' the passion that went into the building of this city and it's Khmer temples.

If you have never been much interested in history - perhaps because of the boring textbook droning of what seemed to be the norm in my day - then come and visit Ayutthaya. I have never had such urge to discover how we got where we are today, than by visiting Ayutthaya - once great city of Thailand. Once a great people in Thailand.

Ayutthaya must have been one of the most beautiful cities in the word. Now, like many other great cities of days gone by, it is in ruin!

Forget - if you can - your 'landing' in the existing Ayutthaya provincial capital. It is not worthy of the great name, and is spoiled by touts and rancid dogs - both of which roam freely and unchecked.

Move on quickly to the great temples of years gone by, which were the real Ayutthaya. Visit it you must, for it is all that made Thailand great.
